The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is a national premier body which was established by the act of parliament to develop and regulate the company secretaries profession. ICSI focuses on training in Company Secretaryship by Distance Learning also known as correspondence enabling the students to qualify as Company Secretaries. The Institute provides the course material for all the subjects at the time of registration. There is also a provision which has been framed for optional oral coaching classes which focus on interactive and practical learning.
A company’s secretary plays so many roles for his company which are as follows :
-A company’s secretary is it’s in-house legal expert, a compliance officer of the company.
-He is an expert in corporate laws related to the corporate side of the company, security laws which are related to the security matters and capital market and corporate governance.
-The company’s secretary is a chief advisor to the board of directors of the company on the best practices in corporate governance matters and much more.
How to become a Company Secretary?
1)To become a company secretary the candidates have to walk themselves through three stages which will teach them the different aspects about being a company’s secretary and the responsibilities and it will also give them a little bit of experience about how it is like to be a company’s secretary. The three stages are as follows :
Foundation Programme : It is the first one and the most basic program. You can call it your first step towards becoming a company secretary. It’ll guide you through the most basic details of everything.
Executive Programme : It is the second program which will guide you through details as well as the importance of different aspects of the company like executive board etc.
Professional Programme : This third stage is most likely to be the one that’ll tell you the difference between everything.It’ll help you settle the differences and doubts you have within yourself about being a company secretary.
2)After these three stages, the student also has to go through a training which lasts for about a minimum of 15 months which a student may start right after passing the third programme i.e. Professional Programme.
3)The foundation programme which is of about 8 months can be pursued by any student who had Commerce, Arts or Science Steam.
4)The Executive programme can be pursued by any candidate who has graduated from any stream except for fine arts.
5)The last programme i.e. the professional programme can only be pursued by the candidates who have passed the executive programme of CS course.

Note:In order to pass the CS Programmes i.e. Foundation Programme, Executive Programme and Professional programme, the candidate must have secured at least 40% of marks in the aggregate and each exam individually.
